Aeva Technologies Pivots to AI Data Centers, Signs Hyperscaler Deal Worth Potentially Hundreds of Millions Annually

Aeva Technologies used its second-quarter earnings call to unveil a strategic expansion that caught analysts' attention more than the automotive LiDAR updates that have historically defined the company's story. Aeva announced the launch of an Optical Connectivity business aimed at AI data centers, alongside a signed joint development agreement with a leading provider of high-speed optical engines targeting a major hyperscaler. CEO Soroush Salahian called the pace of execution "lightning speed," noting the company moved from publishing a technical paper earlier this year to a signed commercial agreement in a matter of months.
A New Multi-Hundred-Million-Dollar Market Opportunity
The core insight from the call is that Aeva is repurposing a decade of laser and silicon photonics development, originally built for automotive and industrial sensing, to address the bandwidth and power bottlenecks facing AI infrastructure. Management framed the total addressable opportunity in stark terms: once qualified at the hyperscaler, deployment "has the potential to exceed multiple millions of units annually, revenues in the multiple hundreds of millions of dollars per year." Initial volumes are targeted for the second half of 2027, with a ramp into full production in 2028.
Salahian was explicit about why Aeva believes it can compete against incumbents already serving optical module makers and hyperscalers. He argued that the prevailing industry approach to achieving high optical power relies on larger laser die sizes and multiple aligned chips to generate sufficient wavelengths, a design choice that hurts yield and repeatability. Aeva's architecture, he said, achieves high optical power with smaller die counts, which the company believes translates into materially better yield and reliability at scale. Whether this claim holds up under hyperscaler qualification testing remains the key swing factor for the business, and investors should treat the near-term revenue figures as directional rather than contracted.
Capital Intensity Looks Manageable, But Questions Remain on Scale
Unlike a typical new-market pivot, management repeatedly emphasized capital efficiency. Salahian told Morgan Stanley's Joseph Moore that the business will lean on existing foundry relationships, contract manufacturing partners, and photonics IP already developed for automotive, meaning incremental R&D spend "won't be massive amounts" even as headcount grows under newly promoted Senior VP of Optical Connectivity Pradeep Srinivasan. That framing is credible given Aeva's balance sheet constraints, but it also means the company is betting heavily on reusing automotive-grade technology in a data center environment with very different reliability and volume requirements, a transition that still requires the joint integration and qualification work now underway.
CFO Departure Adds Near-Term Uncertainty
The call also disclosed that CFO Saurabh Sinha, who has held the role for six years, will depart in September for an opportunity outside the sensing industry. Rupesh Maheshwari, Aeva's VP of Corporate Controller, will serve as interim CFO while a permanent search is conducted. Leadership transitions at small-cap, pre-scale hardware companies carry execution risk, particularly as Aeva simultaneously tries to stand up a new business line and scale automotive manufacturing. Investors should watch for continuity in financial discipline given that Sinha was closely associated with the company's liquidity management, including June's $115 million follow-on equity raise that brought total available liquidity to $302.9 million.
Automotive Programs Progressing, Anchored by Bendix and Daimler Truck
Aside from the data center pivot, the underlying automotive business continues to advance incrementally rather than dramatically. Aeva began manufacturing production-intent Atlas sensors at its automated Jabil assembly line in North America, a milestone toward supporting Daimler Truck's series production timeline. More notable is the progression with Bendix, the dominant commercial vehicle ADAS supplier in North America, which has selected Aeva's 4D LiDAR and perception software for its next-generation Level 2+ ADAS system. Salahian described the content per vehicle as sitting between passenger and commercial vehicle pricing tiers, and importantly noted the design intent is to replace incumbent radar and camera modalities rather than simply add a sensor. With roughly 300,000 Class 8 trucks sold annually in North America and Bendix targeting standard-feature status on flagship OEM models from PACCAR and Navistar/International, this represents one of the more credible volume pathways in Aeva's existing sensing business, independent of the optical connectivity story.
Industrial and Defense Diversification Continues Quietly
Aeva also flagged a commercial launch with SICK AG, one of the largest industrial sensor providers globally, which shipped its first product using Aeva's precision sensing system. Management expects incremental product launches with SICK over the next 12 to 18 months, including a velocity-measurement configuration that could displace encoders and other legacy measurement devices. In defense, Aeva continues supporting Forterra's autonomous ground vehicle retrofit programs and disclosed new, unspecified engagements in aerial autonomy. These verticals remain small relative to the automotive and now optical connectivity opportunities, but they underscore a broader thesis management is pushing: that Aeva's core sensing technology is platform-agnostic and can be redeployed across adjacent markets with limited incremental engineering.
Financial Results Remain Modest Relative to the Narrative
The quarter's actual financial results were unremarkable and should temper enthusiasm about the headline announcements. Revenue came in at $6.1 million, driven by sensor shipments and non-recurring engineering contributions. Non-GAAP operating loss was $26 million, roughly flat year-over-year, while gross cash use was $31.4 million for the quarter. At that burn rate, the $302.9 million liquidity position provides roughly two and a half years of runway even without new capital, but it also highlights that Aeva remains a pre-revenue-scale story banking heavily on the optical connectivity deal and automotive design wins converting to volume production on the timelines management described.
