Dell Technologies Reveals Record $95 Billion AI Backlog and Sees $1 Trillion Long-Term Opportunity as Traditional Servers Outgrow AI Compute

Dell Technologies delivered a quarter that forced Wall Street to recalibrate not just near-term estimates but the entire multi-year growth algorithm for the company. Revenue hit $47 billion, up 58%, while non-GAAP EPS more than tripled to $7.04, up 203%. Management responded by raising full-year revenue guidance by $25 billion to $192 billion and full-year EPS guidance to $25.50, up roughly 150%. The headline number that will dominate the sell-side narrative, however, is the $95 billion AI server backlog, built on a record $60.9 billion of AI orders booked in the quarter alone, pushing trailing-twelve-month AI orders to $131.7 billion.
Traditional Servers, Not AI, Were the Fastest-Growing Line
The more surprising data point buried in the print is that traditional server revenue grew 122% year-over-year, outpacing AI server growth for the second straight quarter and drawing immediate scrutiny from analysts worried about pull-forward demand. CEO Jeff Clarke pushed back directly on the prebuy thesis raised by Evercore's Amit Daryanani, attributing the strength to structural data center modernization rather than one-time stocking. Clarke pointed to 1.2 million installed assets still running on 14th-generation servers or older, with new 18th-generation hardware, shipping next month, delivering 12-to-14-to-1 consolidation ratios versus 6-to-8-to-1 for the current 17G generation. "Demand outstrips supply," Clarke said bluntly, adding that Dell has gained more than 10 points of traditional server share over the past two quarters. Post-quantum cryptography requirements and heightened security mandates are also forcing legacy hardware retirements, a dynamic that adds a durability argument to what could otherwise look like a cyclical refresh spike. CFO David Kennedy backed this up with guidance: traditional server growth is expected to remain in triple digits in the second half.
Storage Inflects at a Pace Not Seen Since the EMC Deal
Storage revenue grew 26%, the fastest pace since Dell's EMC acquisition, according to Morgan Stanley's Erik Woodring, who pressed management on whether the long-discussed $2-to-$3 storage attach opportunity tied to AI servers is finally materializing. Dell IP storage has now grown demand above market for six consecutive quarters, with PowerStore posting double-digit growth for nine straight quarters and unstructured storage products PowerScale and ObjectScale compounding for three. Clarke framed the growth as multi-pronged, citing new data sources tied to agentic AI, including logs, traces and KV cache retention driven by compliance requirements, layered on top of core enterprise data growth. "We see multiple new lines or new paths for storage growth in our businesses," Clarke said, adding that management views this as an accelerating rather than decelerating trend as the industry moves toward physical AI, robotics and IoT-driven unstructured data volumes. Kennedy quantified the mix shift, noting the company is adding more than $2.5 billion of incremental storage revenue year-over-year, almost entirely Dell IP, at materially higher margin than the legacy partner-IP business it is displacing.
Margin Story Is Scale, Not Just Mix
ISG operating margin expanded 620 basis points to 15%, and UBS analyst David Vogt asked management to disaggregate how much of that came from like-for-like product margin improvement versus pure operating leverage. Kennedy's answer was specific: scale contributed just over 400 basis points to the quarter's ISG margin expansion and is expected to be worth over 650 basis points for the full year. Full-year operating expenses are guided to approximately 8% of revenue, which the company describes as the lowest rate in its 42-year history. Clarke was explicit that this is a structural, not cyclical, shift: "We are reaping dividends from the investments that we've made internally in AI, internally in modernization of the company, and it's allowing us to grow without significant investment going forward."
Management Lays Out a $1 Trillion Framework Through 2030
In response to a question from Melius Research's Ben Reitzes about whether Dell's growth could track Nvidia's forward guidance, Clarke offered the most detailed long-term market sizing the company has given to date. He said inference token volume is expected to grow 87-fold to 3,600 quadrillion tokens by 2030, training compute demand is expected to grow 5-fold to 850 zettaflops, and enterprise agentic workloads are expected to become the single largest data center workload category by 2028. Dell expects AI to represent 75% of all data center demand by 2030, requiring an incremental 200 gigawatts of power capacity. Roughly half of that opportunity, spanning Neoclouds, sovereigns and enterprises, sits directly in Dell's target customer base, which Clarke sized as "more than $1 trillion" over the period. Whether this materializes as forecast is unverifiable today, but it represents a meaningfully more specific long-term target than management has previously disclosed on an earnings call.
Enterprise AI Adoption Is Accelerating, Not Just Sovereign and Neocloud Deals
Bernstein's Mark Newman pushed on customer mix within both traditional servers and AI infrastructure, and the answer suggests broadening enterprise adoption is now a real driver rather than a talking point. Dell's AI Factory customer count surpassed 6,500, with 3,300 of those added in just the last three quarters versus eight quarters to reach the first 3,200, an inflection in the sales cycle. Clarke noted enterprise AI revenue, enterprise pipeline and repeat-buyer counts all grew sequentially and year-over-year, and that enterprise customers "tend to buy more storage, and they tend to buy more networking when they engage with us," supporting a more complete, higher-margin solution sale versus a pure GPU box shift to hyperscale-style buyers.
Supply Chain Remains the Binding Constraint
Asked by Citi's Asiya Merchant to detail bottlenecks, Clarke did not sugarcoat the situation: "DRAM, DRAM, DRAM, followed by NAND, NAND, NAND," with additional spot shortages in CPUs, disk drives, ABF substrate, T-glass and optical components. He described the company's supply chain operation as running "red line all out" to keep pace with rack, power and cooling unit demand. Management indicated it had proactively shifted component allocation away from the PC business earlier this year in anticipation of softening consumer demand, redirecting supply toward infrastructure, a decision now paying off in the improved second-half guide. The read-through is that Dell's upside is currently capped by allocation, not demand, which cuts both ways for investors: it validates the demand story but leaves execution risk concentrated in a fragile, tightly-coupled global component supply chain.
Capital Return Accelerates Alongside Cash Generation
Dell returned an all-time record $4.3 billion to shareholders in the quarter, including $3.9 billion of buybacks, nearly double any prior quarterly repurchase level, at an average price of $401 per share, plus a dividend of approximately $0.63 per share. Adjusted free cash flow was $8.1 billion for the quarter. Bank of America's Wamsi Mohan flagged a material sequential increase in financing receivables, which Kennedy attributed to the underlying growth in the AI business rather than any loosening of underwriting standards, noting Dell's financing arm remains focused on short-term structures and that net income to adjusted free cash flow conversion remains above 1x. The company's core leverage ratio sits at 0.8x, and it closed the quarter with $14.2 billion in cash and investments.
