Oracle Says RPO Is Finally Converting to Revenue, Raises Full-Year Guidance to $90 Billion as Cloud Infrastructure Growth Hits 121%

Oracle delivered a quarter that management repeatedly described as an inflection point, and the numbers back up the rhetoric. Total revenue hit a record $19.3 billion, up 30% year-over-year, and for the first time in company history, Q1 revenue grew sequentially off a record Q4 rather than dipping as it typically has. Cloud infrastructure revenue reached $7.4 billion, up 121%, accelerating from 93% growth in the prior quarter. Management used the results to raise full-year guidance to at least $90 billion in total revenue, up 34% year-over-year, and $8.10 in non-GAAP EPS.
The RPO Conversion Story Is the Real News
The most important disclosure on the call was not the headline growth rate but the mechanics behind it. CFO Hilary Maxson said remaining performance obligations rose $26 billion sequentially, but more critically, the company is now seeing that backlog translate into actual revenue and profit at scale. "We now expect around half of our RPO to convert into sales over the next 36 months," Maxson said, a disclosure that gives investors a concrete timeline against a backlog number that has ballooned over the past year. Trailing-12-month operating income growth accelerated from 16% to 21% between Q4 and Q1, which Oracle framed as proof that the RPO-to-revenue pipeline is no longer theoretical.
This matters because Oracle's RPO has been the subject of skepticism given its size relative to current revenue. Maxson was explicit that the vast majority of new contracts signed this quarter came through prepay or bring-your-own-hardware structures, meaning they "won't require incremental capital from Oracle" and won't hit CapEx or revenue lines until fiscal 2028 or beyond. That distinction, between capital required for the buildout and capital Oracle itself must fund, became a recurring theme on the call.
Capacity Delivery Is Outrunning Prior Quarters, and GPUs Are Getting More Valuable, Not Less
CEO Clay Magouyrk detailed a buildout pace that materially exceeded prior quarters. Oracle delivered 850 megawatts of AI capacity containing more than 300,000 GPUs since the end of Q4, almost three times what it delivered in all of Q4 and 73% of total capacity delivered in the entirety of the prior fiscal year. At the Abilene site alone, Oracle delivered 131,000 GPUs in the quarter, 1.9 times the volume delivered in Q4, with six of eight campus buildings representing 618 megawatts now handed to the customer. Magouyrk noted that OpenAI's recently released GPT-6 Astra model was trained at that site. Perhaps the most consequential data point for the bull case on AI infrastructure economics was GPU utilization and renewal pricing. Utilization stood at 97.9% in Q1, and Magouyrk said GPU capacity coming up for renewal was resold or renewed at a 20% premium to prior contracts, with the majority of those GPUs four years or older. "One invariant that has been true so far is that the demand for server-side computing in data centers has only gone up," Magouyrk said. "It turns out so far that everything we see about the AI use case is the same way, but only more so." That renewal premium directly counters investor concerns about GPU depreciation and asset obsolescence in AI data centers.
New Mexico and Wisconsin Delays Addressed Directly, No Impact to Guidance
Analyst Sitikantha Panigrahi of Mizuho pressed Oracle on reported delays at its New Mexico and Wisconsin data center sites. Magouyrk did not dismiss the challenges but placed them in context: those two roughly gigawatt-scale sites were never part of the 850 megawatts delivered this quarter, and neither Shackelford, New Mexico, Wisconsin, nor Michigan contributed to Q1 results. "If their plan relies on 100% achievement of every one of their deliverables, we have a term for that. It's called a bad plan," he said, adding that Oracle builds risk management into its forecasting rather than assuming perfect execution. He confirmed directly that "neither of these sites will have any impact into our previously stated FY '27 revenue or earnings guidance." New Mexico is pursuing an air permit for Bloom fuel cell-based on-site generation, while Wisconsin is working through grid capacity planning with the Public Service Commission, ATC and We Energies.
Gross Margin Compression Is Real, But Operating Margin Is the Metric to Watch
Gross margin declined in the quarter as expected, driven by data center ramp costs and the mix shift toward lower-margin infrastructure revenue, but non-GAAP operating margin held roughly flat at 42%, aided by cost simplification efforts. Analyst John DiFucci of Guggenheim pushed Maxson on how much further gross margin could fall. Maxson reiterated prior guidance for a step-down this fiscal year but said investors "can reasonably expect that gross margin would flatten" over the next couple of years as the infrastructure ramp matures, while declining to give specific numbers ahead of the October Investor Day. She was clear about which metric matters most to management: "For me, operating margin is probably the ultimate point that we want to follow."
Free Cash Flow Stayed Negative, But Oracle Frames the Business as Self-Funding Over Time
Operating cash flow hit a record $23 billion in the quarter, but CapEx of $28 billion drove free cash flow to negative $5 billion, with net cash CapEx of $18 billion after backing out prepayments. Oracle reiterated full-year CapEx guidance of $90 billion to $95 billion, with net cash CapEx capped at $70 billion. The company also confirmed it completed its previously disclosed $20 billion at-the-market equity issuance in full during the quarter, an important data point for investors tracking dilution alongside the capital-intensive buildout. On timing for a return to positive free cash flow, Maxson declined to commit to a specific quarter but argued the underlying unit economics support an eventual inflection: "Each of these projects that we're doing by nature is a strong free cash flow generating project... they're delivering a free cash flow conversion ratio of something like 100% to post-tax EBITDA." Magouyrk separately reinforced that Oracle's growing use of vendor financing, bring-your-own-hardware arrangements and customer prepayments means capital constraints "doesn't have to be Oracle CapEx" going forward, calling it "the continued evolution of the business model" rather than a limitation on growth.
Applications Business Holds Double-Digit Growth, With Management Pushing Back on AI Disintermediation Fears
SaaS revenue grew 10% overall, with Fusion up 14% and industry applications growing more than 20%, addressing a lingering investor concern that generative AI could disintermediate packaged software vendors. CEO Mike Sicilia argued the opposite is occurring: "The introduction of AI is an accelerator, not a replacement for packaged applications." He said embedded AI capabilities were used more than 150 million times in the quarter, up 42% sequentially, with AI agents executing 3.5 million times in production, nearly doubling quarter-over-quarter, and customers running more than 2,300 agents in production, up 90% sequentially. Fusion alone consumed 900 billion tokens in the quarter. Oracle also launched NetSuite Next, a broader agentic revamp of its SMB ERP product, alongside a NetSuite AI Connector Service that links customer data to external AI assistants including ChatGPT and Claude; more than 10,000 customers have already adopted it. Sicilia teased a new "agentic AI accelerator" coming at Oracle AI World in October designed to compress SaaS deployment timelines "from years to months and months to weeks," citing early proof points where healthcare implementation timelines fell from double-digit months to single months.
Multi-Cloud Database and Ecosystem Expansion
Multi-cloud database revenue grew 353% year-over-year with multi-cloud customer count up 180%, as Oracle completed its planned Azure and AWS regional expansion to reach 70 multi-cloud database regions and 119 availability zones. The company also made Oracle Interconnect for AWS generally available, giving it private high-speed connections to every major hyperscaler with no data transfer charges. On the model and partnership side, Oracle expanded its OpenAI relationship to offer API access and GPT-6 Astra through its marketplace, added Gemini models for enterprise applications, released new Grok models, and signed a multiyear partnership with Quantinuum to offer its Helios quantum computer through OCI, positioning the company for hybrid quantum-AI workloads. Management framed the new AI Data Platform, now integrated with Codex and Claude Code, as a flexible layer that can drive consumption across database, applications or infrastructure depending on customer choice rather than a siloed product line.
