NGA Sole-Sources $8 Million Deal, Underscoring Data Moat
The most telling data point from the call was competitive, not financial. Planet disclosed it was awarded an $8 million contract with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to deploy its Global Monitoring Service in support of national defense priorities, with Planet the only vendor considered. Marshall was direct about why: "No one has a sufficient number of Earth imaging satellites in the right kind of plane and all that to do a daily scan. And so if you want to monitor for new threats and monitor things consistently, we're the only game in town." He noted this is not unprecedented — the U.S. Navy similarly moved from a competed contract to a sole-source award once it understood Planet's capability — but the recurrence of that pattern with the second-largest U.S. intelligence agency is a meaningful competitive signal for a company operating in a market where multi-vendor sourcing is typically the default. Defense and Intelligence revenue grew over 90% year-over-year in the quarter and now represents roughly 70% of total revenue, a mix investors will want to watch given its dependence on U.S. and allied budget cycles.
Satellite Services Pipeline Balloons to $4 Billion
Planet's Constellation Services pipeline — sovereign satellite ownership, dedicated capacity, and managed operations deals — now stands at over $4 billion in identified opportunities, with more than $1 billion, or over 25%, qualified as near-term (defined by management as within a matter of quarters, not years). Marshall described the pipeline as maturing "on all fronts," with both smaller civil government deals like Germany's and larger transactions pushing up the top end of deal sizes. The company's differentiator here is speed: its two most recent satellite services partnerships saw first satellites delivered in orbit within two and four months of contract signing, respectively, versus what Marshall called "many years for the space industry historically." In August, Germany awarded Planet a dedicated capacity satellite services tender worth up to EUR 25 million over five years — Planet's first satellite services deal with a federal civil government agency — while Rwanda signed on for national high-resolution data and analytics, marking Planet's first countrywide civil government program in Africa. Chief Financial Officer Ashley Whitfield Johnson flagged that as satellite services revenue scales, investors should expect more volatility in revenue recognition timing, with point-in-time revenue jumping to 12% of total revenue in the quarter from just 1% a year ago, driven by the handover of the first Swedish Armed Forces satellite.
Owl Program Acceleration Signals Pricing Upside
Management used the call to elevate the company's next-generation Owl satellite program, which will upgrade resolution from 3-meter to 1-meter class and cut data latency to as little as one hour in key areas. Marshall framed the scale of the leap bluntly: "it will deliver roughly 10x more data and do so about 10x faster." Customer pull is driving the timeline — Marshall said feedback from GMS and Maritime Domain Awareness customers indicates they "would like to see us accelerate that program, which we are beginning to do." The resolution jump has direct commercial implications: Marshall noted that at 1-meter resolution, Planet could identify vessels down to roughly 10 meters in length, versus the 30-meter threshold required today to assign a specific IMO number to a ship, opening exposure to the much larger population of fishing and smaller commercial vessels. Both Marshall and Johnson confirmed this translates into a pricing opportunity, not just a usage one, given the added onboard AI processing and satellite-to-satellite communication capabilities being built into the new fleet. The acceleration is a contributor to the increased capital expenditure guidance for the year, now $100 million to $115 million, as the company pulls forward long-lead-time procurements to avoid supply chain bottlenecks — a dynamic CFO Johnson said is being actively managed given rising rideshare launch demand across the sector.
Guidance Raised, Margin Mix Shift Bears Watching
For the full fiscal year 2027, Planet raised the low end of its revenue guidance range to $430 million to $441 million, implying growth of 40% to 43%, and lifted its non-GAAP gross margin outlook to 55%-57%, above the prior range. Adjusted EBITDA guidance for the year moved up to a range of $3 million to $10 million. Second-quarter non-GAAP gross margin came in at 59%, down from 61% a year earlier, reflecting investment in satellite services delivery and AI-enabled solutions, though it beat internal expectations. Planet ended the quarter with approximately $865 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, up over 200% year-over-year, after raising roughly $120 million through its at-the-market equity program at an average net price of $31.96 per share. Johnson characterized the raise as building "strategic balance sheet flexibility" rather than funding a specific near-term need, while emphasizing sensitivity to shareholder dilution. Year-to-date adjusted free cash flow stood at $29 million, and the company reiterated its target of being adjusted free cash flow positive on an annual basis for fiscal 2027. AI Strategy: Model-Agnostic, Data as the Moat
Asked about the compression between frontier and open-source AI models, Marshall pushed back on the idea that this threatens Planet's positioning, arguing it strengthens the case for proprietary real-world data. "AI is all about the training data," he said. "Most generally to date, LLMs have trained off the text and other information on the internet. That means they're largely blind to real-world information." Planet's new AI application, which allows natural-language querying of its ten-year daily archive, has moved into open beta and is deliberately built to let users select their own backend model — Gemini, Anthropic, or others — rather than committing to a single frontier partner. Management was clear the app remains in a value-discovery phase, with monetization strategy still being worked out. On the underlying data quality question, Marshall addressed a sharper technical challenge directly: calibration consistency across satellite generations. He explained that all fleets are calibrated against government reference missions like Landsat, Sentinel and MODIS, and that new sensor generations remain backward-compatible with prior spectral bands, a process he called "a huge barrier to entry" that underpins the value of applications like GMS threat detection and Maritime Domain Awareness vessel tracking, both of which depend on years of historical pattern data rather than a single image.
Commercial and Civil Government Diversification
While defense remains the largest and fastest-growing vertical, commercial revenue grew over 15% year-over-year and civil government grew over 5%, with management pointing to expanding use cases outside traditional geospatial buyers. Planet disclosed a six-figure expanded renewal with a hyperscaler AI developer to monitor data center and semiconductor facility construction globally, using Pelican high-resolution imagery to track construction milestones as a proxy for compute capacity build-out — a use case management said is drawing interest from both AI companies and financial services firms. Johnson cited a third-party estimate that the investment management industry alone could be spending $23 billion on alternative data sets by 2030, positioning Planet's imagery as a fit for that demand pool.
