SAP Reports Accelerating Bookings but Trims Profit Outlook as AI Investment Costs Bite

SAP delivered a quarter that split the difference between strong forward-looking demand signals and a profit outlook that came in lighter than investors have grown accustomed to. Current cloud backlog, the company's key leading indicator, grew 26% year-over-year, accelerating from Q1 and reversing two consecutive quarters in which the metric had lagged cloud revenue growth. At the same time, SAP trimmed its full-year operating profit guidance by EUR 0.1 billion to a range of EUR 11.8 billion to EUR 11.2 billion, citing dilution from two recently closed acquisitions, Dremio and Prior Labs.
The disconnect drew immediate scrutiny from sell-side analysts. Morgan Stanley's Adam Wood pressed CFO Dominik Asam on whether investors should read the Q2 operating profit deceleration, down to 9% growth from 24% in Q1, as a signal that margin expansion headroom is narrower than previously assumed. Asam pushed back, arguing that quarterly comparisons obscure the underlying trend. "It's really not conducive to look at one single quarter, but it's really over several quarters," he said, noting that first-half operating profit growth of 16% remains well within the company's targeted 80% to 90% expense-to-revenue ratio even after absorbing all recent M&A.
Bookings Momentum Diverges From Cloud Revenue Deceleration
The CCB acceleration to 26% stands in contrast to cloud revenue growth, which decelerated to 24% from Q1, a gap Asam attributed largely to tough year-ago comparisons rather than any underlying softening. He noted that in Q2 2025, cloud revenue growth had jumped 2 percentage points sequentially, creating a difficult base effect this year. More importantly, he flagged that the historical relationship between the two metrics has flipped in SAP's favor: "Last year, there was a big gap where cloud revenues were below CCB growth. That has now flipped. So that's really positive from our perspective."
CEO Christian Klein added that pipeline visibility for the second half has improved materially following May's Sapphire customer conference, where SAP unveiled its Autonomous Enterprise strategy. "The pipeline after Sapphire is for half year two better than expected, and it's a better coverage than last year," Klein said, adding that AI and SAP Business Data Cloud were embedded in more than 90% of the company's 50 largest deals in the quarter.
New AI Platform Architecture and the Logic Behind Three Acquisitions
The most substantive new disclosure on the call concerned the architecture of SAP's forthcoming Business AI Platform, which Klein described as resting on three pillars: a build layer for developing agents (Joule Studio, which supports models from Anthropic, Cohere, Google, Mistral, OpenAI and open-weight alternatives), a context and reasoning layer built on SAP Business Data Cloud, and an orchestration and governance layer that manages agent lifecycles across more than 130 countries' compliance regimes.
Each of the three recent acquisitions maps directly onto this architecture. Dremio, which closed after Q2, brings Apache Iceberg-native technology that allows SAP and non-SAP data to be queried together in real time without duplication. Reltio, which closed May 7 and contributed less than 1 percentage point to CCB growth, provides master data governance for that combined data set. Prior Labs, the most recently announced deal, brings tabular AI modeling capability that Klein said can deliver prediction accuracy up to 99% without requiring customers to build and maintain their own data science pipelines. Asam offered useful context on why this matters strategically: "SAP has probably the biggest reservoir of tabular databases. That is not public data, it's proprietary data. That is a very different ball game from the large language models where a lot of public data is great."
Klein was explicit that none of the three deals were acquired for growth. "All three acquisitions have only a very, very minor impact on CCB and revenue. The latest two actually have no impact on cloud revenue," he said, framing them instead as capability purchases to strengthen the data and ontology layer underpinning the platform. Combined, Dremio and Prior Labs will weigh on second-half operating profit by what Asam called "a very low triple-digit million euro amount," which the company has chosen not to offset by upgrading underlying organic guidance.
A Deliberate Shift Toward Outcome-Based Pricing
Perhaps the most consequential strategic comment came from Klein on pricing philosophy, where he suggested SAP sees an opening to reset historical discounting norms as AI-driven agents take over tasks previously performed by human end users. "For 50 years, this company has sold systems of record. But customers were used to a certain discount level," Klein said. "Now with AI, we can completely reset the price level. It's not your end user, it's not your financial accounting team who does the financial close, it's the agents doing this autonomously, and here is outcome-based pricing. There is nothing that you can relate to when you come from the system-of-record pricing." He described this as a mandate to sales teams to avoid anchoring AI agent pricing to legacy SaaS price points, calling it "a unique chance" to improve both AI cloud revenue growth and gross margin over time.
Macro Overhang From the Middle East Remains the Wildcard
Both executives repeatedly flagged the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a source of uncertainty weighing on customer decision-making, particularly in directly affected industries and supply chains. Asam said the situation had caused isolated deal delays but "definitely not at the broader scale," and maintained the company's guidance for a slight deceleration in CCB growth by year-end, while acknowledging "the range of possible outcomes for the metric continues to be wider than we would like." Given that the second half typically carries the bulk of SAP's annual bookings, the macro backdrop remains the single largest variable in the full-year outlook.
R&D Cost Inflation Tied to Token Consumption and Selective Hiring
UBS analyst Michael Briest zeroed in on an R&D cost line that grew 14% year-over-year against only 3% headcount growth, well above the 2%/2% ratio seen in Q1. Klein attributed the gap primarily to internal AI token consumption, which is charged back to the functions using it, plus a small number of high-cost specialist hires in data science and full-stack AI development roles. He was clear that broad-based hiring is set to slow sharply: "You can expect now in the next 12 months, not a further increase of headcount. It's just about getting a few experts in and then driving the productivity of R&D up in line with the token consumption." Both executives confirmed that 2026 and 2027 hiring plans have been revised down materially from original targets as internal AI productivity gains, currently averaging 30% in development, reduce the need for additional staff.
EU Maintenance Ruling Seen as Manageable
Asked about a recent EU agreement requiring SAP to offer customers greater flexibility on maintenance terms, Asam downplayed the risk of accelerated migration away from legacy ECC systems, noting that on-premise maintenance revenue is already phasing out as customers move to cloud and RISE, with ECC maintenance expected to approach zero by 2030 regardless. He also pointed to a pickup in customers returning from third-party maintenance providers as a sign that the underlying value proposition remains intact.
